I’m so excited to host Author Cynthia L. Simmons today. Her new Bible study came out in mid-April. I’ve written lessons and devotions before, but the thought of completing an entire nonfiction book blows my mind. So I had a few questions for her.
Marji – Where did the concept of this Bible study originate?
Cynthia – This Bible study is based on the stories in Struggles and Triumphs: Women in History Who Overcame. For instance, Henry VIII of England disliked that fact that his wife, Kateryn, chose to advise him to continue reforming the Church of England. In the study guide I guide the student through passages on submission and compare Kateryn’s activity with Biblical examples.
Marji – I love the idea of connecting to your first book. Why did you select the women you did?
Cynthia – I related to each of them in a special way. For instance, Princess Alice was the Florence Nightingale of the German province of Hesse. My background is nursing so her work fascinated me.
Marji – Which woman do you most relate to and why?
Cynthia – In addition to Princess Alice, I liked Katie Luther. She raised a very large family and managed a busy household. Also I felt camaraderie with Susannah Spurgeon. She often sat with her husband while he prepared sermons. My husband is an elder and I often assist while he prepares material to present.
Marji – Which woman do you most admire?
Cynthia – I admire Katie Luther’s abilities. She managed her husband’s affairs so well that she made him wealthy.
Marji – I had no idea! What do you hope your readers will take away from your study?
Cynthia – I hope they’ll be encouraged by the ladies who walked by faith, and gain a deeper understanding of the Word.
Marji – I’m certainly intrigued! So what are you working on now?
Cynthia – I’m finishing a historical fiction novel on banking during the Civil War.
Marji – Oh, I’m a sucker for a good historical! I look forward to hearing more about it! I’m so glad Cynthia could stop by and share with us about her new Bible Study. More information on Struggles and Triumphs is below.
