“It is the living who give thanks to You, as I do today; A father tells his sons about Your faithfulness.” Isaiah 38:19.
This verse is within a song of praise from King Hezekiah when he learned that the Lord would extend his life. And what an amazing account!
God sealed his promise to extend the king’s life by making the shadow on the palace staircase stretch the wrong way. In essence, the sun went backward in the sky. Ten step-worths to be exact. Wow.
But the take away here is that our job, our mission, is to explain what God has done to the next generation. To give them the foundation of faith and equip them for what He will do long after we are gone. In Exodus, God introduced His feasts for the specific purpose of reminding the people what God brought them through. How He kept His promises so to encourage them that He will do as He says.
Washington (yes, George) got this. He included a blessing to perpetuate the building of God’s kingdom through his life and beyond.

Another godly forefather, Abraham Lincoln understood examining all that God has done for us. In his second inaugural address, he went through the good and bad (mostly bad) of the four prior years. He believed that the war was a judgement of God for the continued use of slavery.
“The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.” With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in.
Praise God that we live in a land founded on His principals. Built on the foundation of Scripture and the gospel of Christ Jesus. We have such blessed freedom to train those around us in His way. Our children are not shipped off to national schools or forced to accept God-missing partial-truths.
I pray our liberty to train up our children in the way they should go so that when they are old, they will not depart from it will continue. Will reach my children’s children’s children, and more unless the Lord returns!
