Word for the Year

word for 2015I really like the tradition I learned about a few years ago. The words that have been impressed upon me have stayed with me throughout the year. Two years ago, I lived with the word ANTICIPATION. I thought I’d be anticipating traditional publishing for my novels. That wasn’t the case, though. God revealed several other opportunities and surprises.

Then last year, I realized that I needed more organization to my life. I chose the word WALK as my focus. I worked more on the spiritual side of walking than the physical side. Daily quiet time was only one of my aims. But I found that the Lord showed me how to “walk” my way through shocks and numerous complications.

As I walked, He showed me other avenues for publishing. Doors opened. Timing lined up perfectly. And doors closed that weren’t along the correct path. Looking back, it’s so obvious how He led me. I’m awed!

So as I anticipate 2016, I started thinking about my focus a few weeks ago. I wanted to have some deep spiritual word, but the one that kept popping up was INTENTIONAL. To me that seems that I need to be sure I make definitive plans and do my best to follow through with them. That won’t always happen, but that needs to be where my effort lies.

At first, I didn’t see that as very spiritual. In fact, I felt like I might need to go back to the drawing board. As I drew out the word, though, I realized that I need to be INTENTIONAL in my walk with the Lord as well. I need to act with purpose in mind, not simply react. And with the knowledge that I am on my “mission field” when I get out of my bed each morning, it makes every word I say and action I take important and worthy of my attention beforehand.

So I determine to be INTENTIONAL in whatever I do this year. With my walk with the Lord, my job leading the children’s choir at my church, how I teach my daughters, as well as the writing, publishing, promoting, and marketing of my books.

Your Turn: What word claims your attention for your focus this year?

  1. My word for 2016 is fairly simple but not easy. Seek God…
